May 2019 Cemetery Plot Policies and Procedures

Pre-planning your burial arrangements can bring peace of mind to you and your family.  It lets the family know your wishes which will ensure that your survivors will not have to make last minute choices under stress.  Be sure to inform your family of your decisions and also where you keep your important documents.

Choosing a cemetery where you wish to be buried is important.  Catholic cemeteries are a vital part of the Church`s heritage of caring for and burying the bodies or cremated remains of the deceased.  It is one of the corporal acts of mercy.

Fort Garry RC Cemetery is a gathering place of remembrance, consolation and community support.  The Eucharist is celebrated yearly on the grounds, marking the anniversary date of its consecration on September 9th, 1934.

In our culture, very few people are comfortable talking about death and loss. This is just one of those things that do not get easier as time goes on.  Anyone over the age of 18, capable of making their own decisions is encouraged to make a plan.  This can be revised, like a will, throughout your lifespan.

Now is the best time to get your plan in order.

Burial Plots

Our Parish cemetery has always offered traditional and cremation burial options. Each full burial plot can accommodate three cremations, or one full burial with three cremations (providing the full burial occurs first). Four ash burials may be permitted on a new plot with no headstone in place. Headstone in this case should be installed in two years. We can no longer offer two full burials in one plot due to our proximity to the river.

Columbarium Niches

Besides in-ground burial of cremated remains, we are pleased to be able to offer above ground inurnment of cremated remains in our new Columbarium Niches. Each niche is designed to hold a maximum of two urns. Urns must be appropriate for human remains and in keeping with Christian tradition. Care should be taken to select urns that will fit into the Niche in a respectful manner.
